Help for Colic

When a family has a colicky baby, it's not just the baby who is suffering but the family as well! Sure, parents tell themselves over and over that the colic is temporary...but knowing that just doesn't seem to help. An inconsolable baby is a distressing scene in any home, and even 3-4 months seems like an enternity. It is no wonder that many parents start blaming each other for not being able to take on this simple responsibility of taking care of an infant.

To prevent yourself from being overwhelmed by these colicky episodes which your baby is going through you could benefit from these tips as help for colic:

  • Remember you or any one in the family has nothing to do with the baby colic symptoms.
  • Help for colic is easily accessible – through doctors’ medicines, home remedies or simple baby soothing steps.
  • A certain amount of crying is normal and even healthy for the baby.
  • Even though your baby may be suffering from colic, he is otherwise a healthy baby.
  • Infant colic is not a major illness and will surely go away in about 3 months’ time.
  • To assess whether your child is indeed colicky, try everything else first: feeding, burping, changing, cuddling, and checking for signs of illness such as fever. Then, if the baby is still crying, try to settle him down to sleep, and walk away. Often, the child will settle down within a few minutes.

The most redeeming part about the treatment options for baby colic is that most remedies are available at home. To treat colic you need loads of patience, understanding and knowledge of some of the very basics of managing a colicky baby. There are many ways you can try to help stop the colic. You can try to figure out if there is a milk intolerance, and if so try to change your diet (if breastfeeding) or change the baby's formula. (More about that here.) You can also try several different remedies to help the colic symptoms. Swaddling, white noise, colic tablets, gripe water and pacifiers are just some things that have been known to help colic.

You could also get good help for colic if you took some preventive measures to keep excess gas away from forming in his digestive system. Here are a few tips to remember:

  • Never rush a baby through a feed.
  • Put the baby in an upright position every 5 minutes or so and let him burp. To make this process easier, gently pat him on the back.
  • A gentle massage done in circular motion usually helps in the release of excess gas. To prevent gas formation, do this regularly.
  • Put the baby on your lap with his face down. Pat or stroke him on his back so that any gas may get released
