Light white noise

Before we analyze the relationship between light white noise and baby in colic pain, let us quickly recap the conditions which make a baby cry in the first place. One of the most popular reasons behind a colicky baby and his incessant cries is attributed to an undeveloped and immature nervous system. Remember, when the baby is born, the only in-born survival skills are sneezing, sucking, swallowing and of course crying. While most babies are born with the skill of calming themselves down,  they capture and assimilate the different stimuli of a brand new world, while they are awake. Unfortunately, round 25% of all babies born are unable to get used to the new stimuli of their surroundings as fast as other babies. Their nervous system is therefore overloaded with all the stimuli like new sights and sounds which they are exposed to throughout their waking hours. They become restless, insomniac and lack the ability to calm them selves down. Their sleep is often disturbed and the only way they know to express their dissatisfaction is through crying.

Light white noise can effectively reduce the environmental stimuli which the baby is incapable of handling and recreate or mimic the environment of the womb. The dark, warm womb environment gave the baby safety and security where the only ‘noise’ he heard was the familiar ‘whoosh’ of placental blood flowing. Interestingly the ‘whoosh’ of the womb can be recreated through many natural ‘light white noise’ appliances like a running vacuum cleaner, a running shower, a fan, running dishwasher, running washing machine, a loud ticking clock, a running bathroom fan, etc.

To recreate the ‘whoosh’ womb sound you could depend of light white noise from CDs as well. Considered extremely effective to calm colicky babies, the light white noise generate by the right CD would usually be a rhythmic, monotonous, low-pitched humming sound which repeats at 60 to 70 pulses per minute.

If you decide to expose your colicky baby to light white noise, make sure that the lights are dimmed and the baby is in a comfortable position. Just the way it was in the mother’s womb.
